Dr. Ayşe Gürel

Ayşe Gürel holds a PhD in Linguistics from McGill University, Canada. She is a full professor at the Department of Foreign Language Education at Boğaziçi University, where she teaches courses on theories of second language acquisition, child and adult bilingualism. Her research focuses on first language attrition and second language acquisition of morpho-syntactic features in English and Turkish as well as neuro- and psycho-linguistic aspects of language acquisition and language loss in children and adults. She has published extensively in international journals and books and currently serves on the editorial boards of Second Language Research and Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism. Notable among her works is an edited volume on Second Language Acquisition of Turkish published by John Benjamins in 2016. Previously, she had a visiting scholar position at the Department of Linguistics, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a DAAD-funded guest professorship position hosted by the Center for Language, Variation and Migration and the Potsdam Research Institute for Multilingualism.  

Dr. Emel Türker

Emel Türker has a BA degree in English Linguistics from Hacettepe University in Ankara (1989). She has received her MA (1993) and PhD (2000) degrees from the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies, University of Oslo. She pursued her Post doctoral research at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, where she currently holds a full-time Senior Lecturer position since 2019 in Turkish Language. She has been teaching Turkish to Norwegian students at the University of Oslo since 1990s. Her doctoral thesis was on Turkish-Norwegian codeswitching among intermediate and second-generation immigrant Turks living in Norway. Apart from bilingualism, language contact, her other research interests have also been language choice and use among deaf and hard of hearing children and children with developmental language disorders (DLD) with bilingual families. Her current research interests are acquisition of Turkish as L2, teaching Turkish as L2 to adults.
